Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. A formidable antagonist. The plot follows the comic-book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is back. There’s, of course, the hilarious wacky humor that is exclusive to director Taika Waititi. However, Love and Thunder, while being a great standalone movie, doesn’t perform as well as the previous Thor instalment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a key element of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade now However, his individual films have either missed the mark or missed the target entirely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a terrible entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a nice start. In the end, everyone’s list of the top five MCU films should include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) certain. The return of the Hemsworth – Waititi collaboration meant that expectations were high prior to the release.
When Gorr (Bale) is a god who seeks to destroy gods after being let down by one, chooses to striking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god-killer by joining forces with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his former girlfriend Jane Foster, who has turned into Mighty Thor. The plot is simple, unlike the Marvel films of recent times, and the performances are positive in this film. Hemsworth excels as the main character who suffers from an identity crisis. Bale and Portman stand out. The title credit sequence in the pre-title credits the possibilities of what Bale is able to do. Gorr could well have been the next Thanos for an MCU which is in desperate need of good supervillains and Bale is able to bring a certain oddity to the character but there’s not much of a much more.
On the other one hand, Portman, who makes her return into the Marvel world following her absence from the last two Thor films, plays the cancer-afflicted ex-girlfriend picked by Mjolnir. In light of the fact that Marvel is willing to hand over the roles of Hawkeye and, within a couple of weeks, Hulk, to women characters, I initially expected that the Mighty Thor to be a similar mark on the representation check list. But, the film sets an emotional backstory for the astrophysicist who can flaunt her biceps several scenes.
Marvel also offers its own flexibility in all the cameos. We also get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast with Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles in Thor Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor and Thor, respectively. Additionally, we see Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of an Asgardian play and director, respectively. Waititi is now Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his favorite genre. There are some hilarious concepts like an emo goat and a noisy one, Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory Thor making leg-splits, or Valkyrie being the spokesperson for Old Spice…
The most popular joke is that Thor would like to get his Mjolnir but is scared of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags are funny, but they are at the expense of intense emotion. They also expose the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder is a film that explores many kinds of love, from a father-daughter bond to the intricate romance of estranged lovers… It’s a parallel between Gorr losing respect for the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor becoming disappointed by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). The ideas are endless, however…
As with all games, there are many easter eggs and even callbacks to films such as Interstellar and Harry Potter. A glimpse of Falligar, the god who died can be seen, directly from comic books. We see Hemsworth dressed in the original Thor costume that comic book lovers will recognize. When Thor takes on the world in a tussle with Zeus, we get to witness a tattoo saying “RIP Loki’ with the helmet of the trickster on our space Viking’s back. The villainous Necrosword is revealed and it’s interesting to see how more weapons are shown to be capable of controlling individuals, considering the way Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own minds.
We’ve seen this in the ten rings from Shang Chi, the magical Bangle from Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post credits scene in Eternals. The line “Gods won’t empower you however, they will utilize to use you” from Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, feels very like something that is relatable. There’s even a story of Valkyrie losing her beloved partner during war, and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
The first portion reminds us of all the color we loved in Ragnarok The majority of the second part is in the darkness, with everything being in black and white. The action scenes in monochrome are quite enjoyable and should be noted.
Hemsworth continues to continue to Thor and Thor for the foreseeable future, which is an enormous relief for MCU fans who’ve seen the first Avengers die or hang their heads.
